Last night Claire and I were whisked up to the roof of John Lewis on Oxford Street in a grass floored lift to celebrate the launch of On Blackheath festival. This isn’t as odd as it sounds because John Lewis are actually sponsoring the festival as are Meantime Brewing Company who were also there. Let me take this moment to highly recommend their London lager to you. It was really good.
John Lewis’ roof garden is super cute and covered in fake grass so even if it had been raining you wouldn’t have to worry about mud! It was festooned in festival lights and lanterns and there were even parrots in the trees. (Stuffed ones, not real ones.)
I, rather foolishly, failed to find out the name of this band (naughty blogger) but they were bloody brilliant. I have since discovered that they are The Royal Organ Duo – check them out! It was just the two of them and they played cover versions in a sort of jazzy, funk, psychedelic style. They were incredible. I think my favourite was when they played No One Knows by Queens Of The Stone Age. I never wanted them to stop. When they did though the rather mega Lulu LeVay took to the stage and played some brilliant tunes (including Jolene! I love Dolly). I really, really wanted to dance but I think I’d have drawn a bit too much attention to myself and would have been on my own in the middle of the garden.
Sitting in a really pretty and quite tranquil garden and looking down on to bustling Oxford Street below is a bit weird but I like it. You can’t hear all the noise and you’re high above all of the rushing, busy people. It’s nice.
John Lewis roof garden is actually open to the public over the summer and has a juice bar, italian food and some gorgeous beach huts with pop up shops in them. If you’re looking for somewhere to escape to on a busy shopping day, I can highly recommend it.
On Blackheath is on 12th and 13th September and features loads of great music and some incredibly tasty sounding food. It’s an awesome way to round off festival season.
Have you been to the roof garden? Are there anymore odd places that have roof gardens that I should check out? Are you going to On Blackheath? Please let me know in the comments.
