Curtains are a classic piece of upholstery that have been in homes for centuries. With so many designs and styles, it’s no surprise that they have been so popular and lasted for so long. Nevertheless, there are many things to dislike about curtains. In fact, the more you think about it, the more it makes sense to maybe ditch them for good. If you’re an avid curtain-lover, this may seem blasphemous to you. But, if you look at the three reasons below, you might start changing your mind!
Curtains look bad from the outside
One of the biggest issues with curtains is that they just don’t look very nice from the outside. The main curtain design is on the inside of your property, so you only see it when you’re standing in the room. For passers-by, they get a face full of a bland sheet of fabric. It honestly doesn’t look that great, and blinds provide a much more stylish look from the outside.
Other things do what curtains do, but better
Most people opt for curtains because they provide you with more privacy. You can close them and be shut off from the world, or you can get curtain nets that offer some privacy without sucking all the light out of the room. Here, you have two alternatives that provide privacy and are way better than curtains themselves. For instance, window film is a great net curtain alternative as it makes it harder for people to see into your home, while still giving you full access to the natural light. You get this without a set of ugly net curtains in the way!
Similarly, blinds can do what curtains do. You can get blackout or privacy blinds that close your home off to the world, but they are way more stylish. Plus, you can control the light levels entering your home so easily with blinds. All in all, if you’re buying curtains for functionality, there are better options out there.
Curtains are really hard to maintain
Looking after your curtains is a massive pain. Essentially, you have huge strips of fabric that attract dust, pet hairs, and all sorts of airborne allergens. Additionally, they’re prone to stains and fading from the sun. This is actually why the curtain design is usually only on the inside – it would fade if it was facing the window all the time!
Cleaning and maintaining your curtains is an ordeal because it has to be done so often. You need to clean them once a week at least, whereas you can get away with less frequent cleaning of blinds. Plus, blinds aren’t going to attract dust and allergens as much, so it’s not as important that you keep them clean. Overall, curtains are a bit of a pain to look after, which is why they should be ditched.
Moving away from curtains and opting for blinds can seem like a massive step. It’ll be a big change, but it’s one that you might want to consider. Curtains have had a strong run, but perhaps it’s time to put them to rest.
